Athenry Castle, Co. Galway, Ireland

Athenry is a very notable medieval walled town and is steeped in history. It was founded by the Norman lord Miler de Bermingham who built the castle there in about 1250. What we see here is the Hall Keep. This was where the Lord received guests or tenants and presided over the manor court. The town is 15 miles/24km from Galway on the M6 Dublin/Galway Motorway. It is also well served by rail with several services daily to/from Dublin, Galway & Limerick. It is also very close to The Wild Atlantic Way.
